The Heart Sound Recorder is a computer based, general wellness monitor used to observe heart sounds.

What are the Heart Sound Recorder (HSR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) tests?

The Heart Sound Recorder (HSR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) are computer based, low risk, general wellness monitors which use specialized sensors to observe heart sounds and beat lengths.

During this simple process, the Heart Sound Recorder sensors are first placed over each of the four valve areas of the heart, in order to graph sound and movement.

The Heart Rate Variability test allows you and us to monitor the activity of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the nervous system to assess autonomic function.

Both are important tools used to help you evaluate your overall health and allows you to follow the progress you are making while working with Healthy Out West.

The Heart Sound Recorder can tell us a lot about how well your heart is functioning, and your overall wellbeing by recording the following things.

How the HSR helps us help you.

  • Your nervous system controls your heart rate. One side of your nervous system manages your "fight or flight" response (sympathetic), which can accelerate your heart rate. The other side (parasympathetic) manages your "rest and digest" response, which can slow your heart rate. You need a healthy balance between the two.

  • The rhythm of your heart shows the rest ratio. Your heart should be resting twice as long as it is working. Observations are made to see if your heart is working too hard or not working hard enough.

  • The tone of your heart refers to the strength of the ventricles as they push blood through your body. The reading on the graph shows how efficiently your heart is pushing blood through your body.

Your Nervous System controls the rate

Your nervous system controls the RATE at which your heart beats. One side of your nervous system (sympathetic) manages your "fight or flight" response, which can accelerate your heart rate. The other side (parasympathetic) manages your "rest and digest" response, which can slow your heart rate. You need a healthy balance between the two.

Work to rest ratio

The RHYTHM of your heart should reveal a specific work to rest ratio on the graph. Your heart should be resting twice as long as it is working. Observations are made to see if your heart is working too hard or not working hard enough.

The strength of the ventricles

The TONE of your heart is referring to the strength of the ventricles as they push blood through your body. The height and the width of the "lub dub" sound your heart makes on the graph shows how efficiently your heart is pushing blood through your body and refilling to prepare for the next cardiac cycle.

Is your heart well fed?

The heart is the most reflective muscle of balanced nutrition or malnutrition. You are what you eat, and your heart shows it first. Is your heart fed well? At Healthy Out West, that's exactly what we help you do – determine what to feed the organs in order to run at optimal health.

How efficient is your heart?

The nutritional efficiency of your heart impacts every organ in your body. What nutrients are you lacking? Your body can answer these questions, and help you track and validate improvements in your nutritional status with one quick, simple test!
